Fig. 1 Silent Chain, also known as Inverted Tooth Chain, has inner links that conform to the sprocket teeth shape. The angled sides f the link teeth push against the sides of the sprocket teeth to transmit torque.

Fig. 2 The chain links rotate about the axis of the pin at point A and engage the involute on the sprocket teeth. Since the links slide into the sprocket at a relatively small angle, α ,the engagement is smooth and quiet.
